5 Easy Life Changing Steps To Eat Clean

  I remember my first week at nutrition school and how excited I was to add on to my life experiences inside and out of the kitchen.  I knew that I loved cooking and I was really good at creating recipes off the cuff but I didn’t really have structure.  As a new mom, I was pretty desperate to find ways to stay healthy though proper nutrition because running alone was not the answer. Let me tell you a quick story before I get into how to start eating clean and what lead me on this path to begin with.  I was born in the Dominican Republic and immigrated to the United States as a young child with my mom and three brothers.  Though the budget was tight, my mom made sure she had fresh fruit and vegetables in the fridge.  I remember it was an adjustment for us all to eat later than we had in the Caribbean, the staples we had were white rice, beans, an animal protein, salad and perhaps a fried item like plantains.   What I recall vividly was the fact that my mom was always very concerned about myself and my brothers’ wellness.  She was always pushing the fresh produce and though she gave into the influences of packaged foods seen mostly in commercials during the times we watched our cartoons after school, she did her best to simply keep us well nourished. I tell this short version of my childhood because I believe that what you ate as a child effects your nutritional choices as an adult.  Sometimes, people do the complete opposite of how they were raised because they feel within them that they need to do something different.. healthier. However, it is also true that our parents or the folks who raised us are our most prominent influencers.  This is the reason why I believe so strongly that as women and the nucleus of the home, we must lead by example and teach our children about proper nutrition without stress.  When we do this, we are not only teaching them lifelong lessons about nutrition and what belongs in their bodies, we are also conditioning ourselves to do better for ourselves and make a commitment to better health and wellness. But sometimes it's virtually impossible to get started, right?  So here’s the scenario.. you have your child.  You know feel fat and puffy (specially those few postpartum weeks) while you’re nursing and nothing fits quite the same.  It sucks and that’s the truth.  You see all these skinny women who just gave birth and are showing off their bods in tiny bikinis on the cover of magazines right in your face on the checkout line and feel even worse.. but think, “ I have to get my butt in gear!” let me buy the _____ shakes or ________ healthy frozen meals because deep down inside you really don’t know what the first step should be.
